The conference program includes keynote, invited and contributed talks, as well as posters. This conference series has been characterized by a range of innovative themes, including multiscale geometric transforms such as the curvelet transform, compressed sensing and clustering in cosmology, while at the same time remaining closely linked to front-line open problems and issues in astrophysics and cosmology.
Digging Deeper and Faster: Algorithms for Computationally Limited Problems in Time Domain Astronomy from 12 December 2011 08:30 AM to 13 December 2011 08:30 AM — Caltech, Pasadena CA,
There are many areas of astronomy where the sensitivity of searches for some types of signals is computationally limited, and either faster computers or better algorithms would lead to more discoveries in the same massive data sets or data streams. Examples include gravitational-wave data analysis, or the rapidly developing field of synoptic sky surveys, where transient signals from a variety of interesting astrophysical phenomena must be detected and characterized in (near) real-time. This workshop is a part of the Keck Institute for Space Studies program on “Digging Deeper: Algorithms for Computationally-Limited Searches in Astronomy”. Our goal is to review some of the work done to date, and focus on some of the outstanding issues for the future studies. The workshop is open to anyone interested, and there is no registration fee. However, a registration is mandatory, for the logistical purposes, as the venue size is limited. Please register at http://www.astro.caltech.edu/digging/ . Modern astronomical research faces a vast range of statistical issues which have spawned a revival in methodological activity among astronomers. The Statistical Challenges in Modern Astronomy II conference brought astronomers and statisticians together to discuss methodological issues of common interest. Time series analysis, image analysis, Bayesian methods, Poisson processes, nonlinear regression, maximum likelihood, multivariate classification, and wavelet and multiscale analyses were all important themes. Many problems were introduced at the conference in the context of large-scale astronomical projects including LIGO, AXAF, XTE, Hipparcos, and digitised sky surveys. As such, this volume will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in both fields – astronomers seeking exposure to recent developments in statistics, and statisticians interested in confronting new problems.

Digital sky surveys, high-precision astrometry from satellite data, deep-space data from orbiting telescopes, and the like have all increased the quantity and quality of astronomical data by orders of magnitude per year for several years. Making sense of this wealth of data requires sophisticated statistical techniques. Fortunately, statistical methodologies have similarly made great strides in recent years. Powerful synergies thus emerge when astronomers and statisticians join in examining astrostatistical problems and approaches. The book begins with an historical overview and tutorial articles on basic cosmology for statisticians and the principles of Bayesian analysis for astronomers. As in earlier volumes in this series, research contributions discussing topics in one field are joined with commentary from scholars in the other. Thus, for example, an overview of Bayesian methods for Poissonian data is joined by discussions of planning astronomical observations with optimal efficiency and nested models to deal with instrumental effects. The principal theme for the volume is the statistical methods needed to model fundamental characteristics of the early universe on its largest scales.

This three week SAMSI mini-research program will provide a venue for astronomers and astrostatisticians to share experience with statistical techniques and to help existing best practices spread amongst the community.
